FALL/WINTER 2008 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS: Queens Symphony Orchestra, in our 56th season and the only professional orchestra in Queens, will present four in-class workshop topics Monday Dec. 1 – Friday Dec. 12, 2008. These workshops can be used individually, as a group, and/or as an enhancement of our Young People’s Concert Why a Conductor?, taking place Oct. 21, 2008. They will each be taught by a professional QSO musician and the lesson plan will be tailored to the age and musical expertise of your students in your classroom (not auditorium or cafeteria – must be classroom-size to be effective). Each workshop will last approximately 45 minutes and there will be a minimum of 2 classes taught within 2 hours per school, but each school has the option to order additional classes (3 classes in 3 hours, 4 classes in 4 hours). The deadline to reserve your classes is Monday, November 3, 2008 (first come, first-served basis). CONDUCTING - The basics of conducting, including the history of it’s use, the importance of a conductor, and demonstrations will be included in the lesson plan. RHYTHM - The lesson plan, based on your classes grade and experience level, will include time signatures, general rhythmic notation, creating beats as a group, and demonstrations of more complicated rhythmic units. THEORY - This customized lesson plan will focus on the basics of music theory and how it effects the composition of all music; from classical symphonic works to the pop music we hear on the radio. CLASSICAL INSTRUMENTS - Using demonstrations and a customized lesson plan, the classical music groups - strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion will be addressed and described. SPRING 2009 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS: Queens Symphony Orchestra will present four in-class workshop topics during spring; Monday April 20 – Friday May 1, 2009. These workshops can be used individually, as a group, and/or as an enhancement of our Young People’s Concert Let’s Make an Orchestra!, taking place May 21, 2009. They will each be taught by a professional QSO musician and the lesson plan will be tailored to the age and musical expertise of your students in your classroom (not auditorium or cafeteria – must be classroom-size to be effective). Each workshop will last approximately 45 minutes and there will be a minimum of 2 classes taught within 2 hours per school, but each school has the option to order additional classes (3 classes in 3 hours, 4 classes in 4 hours). The deadline to reserve your classes is Monday, March 23, 2009 (first come, first-served basis). STRINGS - The basics of this instrument group - violin, viola, cello & bass - will be discussed; including their history, structure and place in the orchestra. Demonstrations will be included in the lesson plan. WOODWINDS - The lesson plan, based on your class’ grade and experience level, will include the history and differences between the flute, bassoon, and oboe using demonstrations. BRASS - This customized lesson plan will focus on the brass family including French horn, trumpet, tuba, and trombone with demonstrations for your students to enjoy. PERCUSSION - Using demonstrations and a customized lesson plan, the percussive instruments - including tambourine, cymbals, drums, and xylophone will be addressed and described. EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE FOR YOUR SCHOOL In-Class Workshops In-class workshops are presented year round and can be related to music in general or curriculum standards such as math, science, English, and social studies. The workshop subject can be determined by your school’s needs. This is a cost effective way of bringing a teaching artist/QSO musician into the classroom to interact in an intimate setting. In-School
Performances Brass quintets, woodwind quintets, and string quartets comprised of QSO professional musicians are available to visit your school, where they will present a fun, interactive, educational concert in your school auditorium. This is a great way to bring additional music education into the school, and the kids will have a great time listening to and learning about all the instruments!!
